Consalvo's 9 Innovative Ideas to Make Boston Safer

Mayoral candidate Rob Consalvo wants dash-mounted cameras in every cruiser to automatically collect evidence and record interactions Boston Police have with citizens.

District 5 City Councilor Rob Consalvo is running for Boston mayor - maybe you've noticed some signs around Roslindale?

Consalvo offered nine ways he would like to make Boston safer, including expanding ShotSpotter, an acoustic gunshot technology that automatically alerts police when a gun is fired, which he first brought to Boston.

"Boston is a world-wide leader in innovation and I want to harness the brainpower and expertise in our innovation communities to come up with common sense technology to keep our streets safe," said Consalvo.

What do you think of Consalvo's ideas? Leave a comment in the section below.

  1. Expand ShotSpotter
  2. A voluntary registry of private and public surveillance cameras, so Boston police know where the cameras are and don’t have to waste precious time finding them when a crime happens.
  3. Coordinated traffic signals to allow emergency vehicles to breeze through intersections and arrive on scene quicker.
  4. If you lose your smartphone, you use the GPS to find it. Consalvo is pushing gun manufacturers to put GPS chips in handguns that can be activated when the gun is lost or stolen.
  5. Mobile fingerprint scanners in every Boston Police cruiser to help officers identify victims and suspects quicker and more efficiently.
  6. Dash-mounted cameras in every cruiser to automatically collect evidence and record interactions Boston police have with citizens.
  7. A mobile technology unit that could rapidly deploy ShotSpotter, cameras and other technology to help Boston police quell violence in crime hotspots.
  8. A quarterly Public Safety Report Card for each neighborhood sent to every resident in the city charting progress in preventing and solving crimes.
  9. Updated 911 technology that allows people to send pics to police dispatchers and investigators, "because sending pictures of crime scenes and suspects to police should be just as easy as sharing cute cat pics with the world."
