Before the evening an officer had been contacted by the owner of the bar due to concerns of drug activity at his establishment. Officers had staked the place out noting who was entering and exiting the establishment with great frequency.

The officers followed the two suspects into the bar, and one was not visible. The officer went to the bathroom and found the suspect using the urinal. As the officer went to an open urinal he allegedly observed and heard the suspect say to another man, "Hey I got those Watsons 749." The other man asked for how much, and the suspect then said, "Five bucks." The other man said he'd take one, according to a Boston Police report.

Money and a pill were exchanged, and then the officer announced himself as a Boston Police officer.
